The Basilica of Saint Martin
Situated in the Aime Valley
The Basilica of Saint Martin, also known as the
Church of the Priory of Saint Martin of Aime, is a pure gem, evidence
of early Roman art and unique in the valley, see further on. In the
basement its crypt and its ambulatory, teach us about the religious
practices of the middle-ages.
The choir, decorated with frescos from
the end of the XIIth century and extended by a well-constructed vaulted
nave, which is today enclosed, give us a clear idea of the substance
and scale of this structure.
The Tower of the Lords of Montmayeur, Viscounts of Tarentaise, is a powerful sign of seigniorial power in the middle ages. Built downstream of the town, it was first used to monitor traffic on the Isère and played a defensive role. The latter function was reduced as the defences were developed and, after the death of Jacques de Montmayeur, the last to bear the name, it returned to the fold of the Miolans family.
